Bernie Taupin and Elton John's Unique and Successful Songwriting Partnership & Process

Bernie Taupin and Elton John had a unique and highly successful songwriting partnership. Unlike many songwriting duos who write together in the same room, they worked separately before bringing their contributions together. Here’s how their creative process worked:

1. Bernie Taupin Wrote the Lyrics First

  • Taupin would write full lyrics without music—essentially poetry or storytelling lyrics.
  • He often worked alone, drawing inspiration from personal experiences, books, movies, or historical events.
  • His lyrics weren’t tied to a specific melody, giving Elton room to interpret them freely.

2. Elton John Composed the Music

  • Elton would receive Taupin’s lyrics and then sit at the piano to create a melody.
  • He composed incredibly fast—sometimes finishing a song in as little as 30 minutes!
  • He rarely changed Taupin’s lyrics, instead shaping his melodies to fit the words naturally.

3. Refining & Arranging

  • Once Elton had the music, he’d work with his band or a producer to refine the song.
  • Orchestration, instrumentation, and harmonies were added during production.

4. Recording & Performing

  • After refining the arrangement, they recorded the song in the studio.
  • Elton John’s performance and unique vocal style brought Taupin’s lyrics to life.

Example of Their Process in Action

  • "Your Song" – Taupin wrote the lyrics in 15 minutes while having breakfast, and Elton composed the melody almost immediately afterward.
  • "Rocket Man" – Taupin was inspired by Ray Bradbury’s short story The Rocket Man, and Elton turned the lyrics into one of his most famous ballads.

This unusual lyrics-first, music-later approach allowed them to create timeless songs with deep emotional impact.

I Do Like to Be Beside the Seaside Song from Outlander, Claire, Fanny and Faith

Everyone delights to spend their summer's holiday
down beside the side of the silvery sea.
I'm no exception to the rule, in fact, if I'd my way,
I'd reside by the side of the silvery sea.

But when you're just the common garden Smith or Jones or Brown,
At business up in town, you've got to settle down.
You save up all the money you can till summer comes around
Then away you go to a spot you know where the cockleshells are found

Oh! I do like to be beside the seaside!
I do like to be beside the sea!
Oh I do like to stroll along the Prom, Prom, Prom!
Where the brass bands play, "Tiddely-om-pom-pom!"

So just let me be beside the seaside!
I'll be beside myself with glee
and there's lots of girls beside,
I should like to be beside, beside the seaside,
beside the sea!

Timothy went to Blackpool for the day last Eastertide
To see what he could see by the side of the sea.
As soon as he reached the station there the first thing he espied
Was the wine lodge door stood open invitingly
To quench his thirst, he toddled inside and called out for a wine
Which grew to eight or nine, till his nose began to shine.
Said he 'What people see in the sea, I'm sure I fail to see'
Then he caught the train back home again and to his wife said he

William Sykes the burglar he'd been out to work one night
filled his bags with jewels, cash and plate.
Constable Brown felt quite surprised when William hove in sight.
Said he, "The hours you're keeping are far too late."
So he grabbed him by the collar and lodged him safe and sound in jail.
Next morning looking pale, Bill told a tearful tale.
The judge said, "For a couple of months I'm sending you away!"
Said Bill, "How kind! Well if you don't mind, Where I spend my holiday!"

Oh! I do like to be beside the seaside!
I do like to be beside the sea!
For the sun's always shining as I make my way,
And the brass bands play, "Ta-ra-ra-boom-de-ay"

So just let me be beside the seaside!
I'll be beside myself with glee
and there's lots of girls beside,
I should like to be beside, beside the seaside,
beside the sea!

In Outlander, Claire Fraser sings a few lines from the song to her stillborn child, Faith, in episode 207, "Faith" (2016). In Episode 716, "A Hundred Thousand Angels", Fanny sings part of the song to herself, and a recording of the song is heard during the closing credits of that episode.

Collective Effervescence

"Collective effervescence" is a term introduced by sociologist Émile Durkheim to describe the energy, unity, and shared excitement people feel when they gather for a common purpose or participate in a communal event. This phenomenon often emerges in situations like religious ceremonies, concerts, sports events, festivals, or protests, where individuals come together and feel part of something larger than themselves.

In these moments, individuals may experience a sense of unity that strengthens group bonds and may even lead to a transformation in their behavior or beliefs. Durkheim argued that this collective energy is a source of social cohesion, reinforcing shared values, identities, and norms within a community.

If You Could Read My Mind Love Gordon Lightfoot

If you could read my mind, love
What a tale my thoughts could tell
Just like an old time movie
'Bout a ghost from a wishin' well
In a castle dark or a fortress strong
With chains upon my feet
You know that ghost is me
And I will never be set free
As long as I'm a ghost you can't see
If I could read your mind, love
What a tale your thoughts could tell
Just like a paperback novel
The kind the drugstores sell
When you reach the part
Where the heartaches come
The hero would be me
Heroes often fail
And you won't read that book again
Because the ending's just too hard to take
I'd walk away, like a movie star
Who gets burned in a three way script
Enter number two
A movie queen to play the scene
Of bringing all the good things out in me
But for now love, let's be real
I never thought I could act this way
And I've got to say that I just don't get it
I don't know where we went wrong
But the feeling's gone and I just can't get it back
If you could read my mind, love
What a tale my thoughts could tell
Just like an old time movie
'Bout a ghost from a wishing well
In a castle dark or a fortress strong
With chains upon my feet
The story always ends
If you read between the lines
You'll know that I'm just trying to understand
The feeling that you lack
I never thought I could feel this way
And I've got to say that I just don't get it
I don't know where we went wrong
But the feeling's gone and I just can't get it back

Canada's Best Outdoor Blues Rock Soul Music Event: Etwell Concert Series in Muskoka, Ontario - Cultural and Culinary Tourism

UPDATED June 2022

Beyond the lush forests and sparkling rivers, ponds and lakes;  there are country roads near Huntsville, Ontario that will lead you deep into the woods to a magical hidden place.
A place for musicians and music lovers.

I was lucky enough to experience this 'best kept secret' for a
Crowbar (Oh What a Feeling...What a rush) concert.

After being at this Muskoka pavilion I can't decide what the key highlight is:
the sense of community, family atmosphere, live music or the legendary pizza!

Etwell Concert Series features live music at an outdoor venue near Huntsville, Muskoka. Most shows are hosted by the Spring family (Bill, Jeanine, and Tobin) at their home on the Etwell Road.

The venue is a remote, private location in a country setting with an open pavilion to provide shelter from the elements. (Power outages do not affect whether their shows go on. They have a generator)

This family event mostly takes place June through October on most Sundays, 3 - 6 pm (with occasional weeknight shows). Fall and winter shows will be held at indoor venues in Huntsville.

Chairs and benches are provided and all shows are rain or shine. But you are welcome to bring your own as well.

Admission is a suggested $20 donation per person for the outdoor concerts, with proceeds going to the artists. Donations can be made on site. Children are welcome at our outdoor concerts and admitted free of charge.

Etwell Concert Series artists are internationally acclaimed musicians, including Juno-award-nominees and winners, as well as Maple Blues Awards nominees and winners. Our opening acts are often local musicians

They have merch!
Hats and Apparel

Clean and Charming bathroom facilities

Lovely gardens surround the venue.

During the opening act you can smell the wood burning
in the massive outdoor stone pizza oven.

Then the
"Mistresses of Deliciousness"
work their culinary magic
to make the
LEGENDARY
Pizza!
