The Cake Cabinet

Growing up we had a curio cabinet in an everchanging prominent place in the formal family spaces. Maybe in the entry hall or tucked in a corner in the living room. During the holidays it was in the dining room. At night my Mom would flip on the long lightbulb inside to illuminate her precious collectibles. Antique porcelain serving pieces, sweet-faced HummelsRoyal Doulton figurines and Swarovski crystals set up on round mirrors. My Mom is gone now but her curio cabinet is still here. In fact, it is literally six feet away from where I am writing this, and her ashes are displayed on the bottom shelf. I am certain she would be livid knowing she was inside this dark wood display, but ‘we’ are uncertain what to do next. Sorry Mom. Forgive us.
