Thank you Alex Buckman

"I knew it was important the moment I saw it," said Alex Buckman, referring to the small notebook he found in a drawer in his aunt Rebecca's apartment in Ottawa. It contained about 100 recipes written in French on lined, brown paper. The book was more than 50 years old, the recipes were mostly for splendid desserts -- Gâteau aux orangesSabayon italienneGâteau neigeSoufflé à la confiture. But it was neither the age of the recipes nor their grand style that made the book so special. It was their provenance: Rebecca Teitelbaum had created the book while she was imprisoned for 17 months at Ravensbruck concentration camp in Germany during the Second World War.

One of the very few such recipe books to survive the Shoah belonged to Rebecca Teitelbaum, who, as a forced laborer in Ravensbruck, managed to steal paper, pencil, needle and thread to write and sew together a tiny, 110-page book of the recipes she recalled from home. The women around her found comfort in reading the recipes aloud to one another. Teitelbaum lost the book during her forced evacuation from the camp, but a stranger found it and succeeded in returning it to her in Belgium, where he located her two years later. The book is now housed in the Vancouver Holocaust Education Center.

Lavender Oil: The Grandmother

Let's Celebrate LAVENDER!

Lavender (Lavandula Angustifolia) has a scent that’s a wonderful blend of fresh, floral, clean, and calm. It’s this dynamic aroma that has made the flower a classic for perfumes, soaps, fresheners, and beauty products. As one of Young Living's most popular products, Lavender oil is a great beginner oil and a must for every home.

Lavender essential oil isn’t just a favorite because of its classic scent—it’s also highly versatile. From skin care products to relaxing routines, this oil can infuse many areas of your life.

+ Treat yourself to this well-loved aroma by adding a few drops of oil to lotions, shampoos, and skin care products.

+ Create a spa-like retreat by combining 1 cup Epsom salt and 4 drops oil and adding to a hot bath.

+ Make a basic homemade body scrub with coconut oil, sugar, and Lavender essential oil.

+ Unwind with a Lavender-infused neck or back massage.

+ Use Lavender as part of your evening routine. Rub oil on the bottom of your feet before bed or spritz your pillow with distilled water and Lavender mixed in a spray bottle.

+ Create a DIY room freshener with Lavender or diffuse it to banish stale odors.

Oil Spotlight: Lavender: The Grandmother (from Courtney Critz)

For those of you who are new to this group, I like to assign personalities to oils. Hang with me, I'm not crazy. Well, maybe…

So often we start thinking about oils in dosages and prescriptions, and they're just not like that. They're closer to foods with certain components that help our bodies in different ways. So instead of thinking specifically about how I use this oil for this problem, I think more about how this oil does this job in my body and can be applied in many, many situations.

Lavender Oil: The Grandmother

Where to BUY
For instance, Lavender Oil. For many this is their gateway into oil territory. Lavender makes me think of a wonderful Grandmother. Soft and huggable, gentle, smells like flowers, calming, and the one you want around if you are sad, tired, or need comforting. She has experience and wisdom and seems to be able to fix every problem. She is soft-spoken and makes you feel more rested the moment she's around. And she seems to have that perfect knack with any baby.

For centuries lavender has been used for sleep. It has been put into pillows and mattresses, wrapped up with clothes, added to handkerchiefs (hello, diffuser) and used in aromatherapy for relaxation. It has been added to all kinds of tonics and potions for skin and smelling salts for fragile ladies whose corsets were tied a little too tight.

Unfortunately, over the years, many "lavender" scented items became filled with synthetics and fillers which actually irritated our airways and lost all of their benefits. People even started giving lavender a bad reputation as being unsafe because of all the synthetic, chemical-laden products that had been used bearing its name. There is more lavender oil sold than grown in the world which doesn't really add up right. But, hooray!, Young Living began growing and distilling its own lavender to ensure a high quality oil, making sure that we had the real thing again. I've planted and harvested it myself in Idaho and Utah! I mean, who wants a fake grandmother? Little Red Riding Hood can tell you that is NOT a good plan.

Today we use our Young Living Lavender Oil in many similar ways. In our lotions, bath products, sleep roll-ons, diffusers, and on our precious babies. It is a gentle oil with a calming effect on everything from our respiratory systems, to our skin, to our emotions. So when you have a problem and you want something to be comforted, whether it's your irritated nose, your foot, or your baby, remember The Grandmother of all oils and give her a try.

Application:
- Add to diffuser for calming and sleep
- Apply to palms and inhale deeply when upset or tense
- Add to skincare recipes or directly to soothe skin
- Apply to sinus areas to soothe the respiratory system, especially with seasonal changes
- Rub on tiny feet for comfort

Lavender+ Vitality
- Add to foods and drinks for a delicious flavor. Example: Lavender Lemonade
- Drop under the tongue or add a drop to food or drink for immediate calming of the respiratory system.

LAVENDER AND EMOTIONAL SUPPORT (from Carissa Sherman)

For the first few months that I had my starter kit of essential oils, I was in the dark about their emotional benefits. I still laugh (but mostly cry) about how they would sit unused when I was stressed, thinking I was going crazy, or feeling really hopeless.

An oil doesn’t have to have an emotional sounding name, like “Joy”, to be an emotionally uplifting oil. What I’ve discovered is that the basic oils have everything you need to establish a foundation or routine for emotional wellness.

Courtney likened Lavender to a Grandmother, gentle and comforting. Emotionally, we can carry that example over and say that Grammy Lavender helps us calm down when we’re afraid of being abandoned, and encourages us to be more gentle when we are critical of ourselves or others. And she is always a safe place for vulnerability, encouraging us to try new things, and to never give up.

Lavender emotionally helps us to release abandonment, criticism, and fear of unfoldment. Most people associate the scent with sound sleep, which makes perfect sense if you consider how many children struggle to sleep for fear of being left alone.

Additionally, inner criticism can rob us of relaxation since it causes physical stress. The fear of unfoldment ties directly into both of these, as it can be caused by fear of being criticized when people see us for what we are. We might fear being rejected and abandoned when we are vulnerable.

ACTIVATION: start some lavender in the diffuser or rub it between your hands and inhale for several moments

Consider these emotions:

Abandonment

Criticism

Fear of unfoldment

If you can, journal about where these negative emotions have impacted your relationships.

Inhale lavender, and apply it to the lower back, the upper back of the scalp (the point where hair starts falling back instead of to the side), and at the love handles just below the waist.

Focus on these new truths to release the old emotional patterns. Repeat any time you recognize the old pattern cropping up.

I embrace all of life’s experiences

I receive

I allow movement

With consistency, we can change the way we think, and consequently, change our health from the inside out.

LAVENDER+ VITALITY OIL

(this is the one that comes with the white vitality label, which is labeled for internal use! yay!)

Use Young Living Lavender Vitality essential oil (Lavandula angustifolia) to create elegant dishes that will impress your family and friends. The herb has a sweet, slightly floral flavor that pairs well with both rich and light foods. Use Lavender Vitality™ essential oil to conveniently add this delightful flavor to your meals.

Although more popular with sweeter recipes, Lavender Vitality oil’s benefits extend to savory dishes as well. In fact, lavender is sometimes included in the famous Herbes de Provence along with spices such as marjoram, thyme, oregano, and rosemary. Put a new spin on a classic meal and pair it with chicken, lamb, or even potatoes.

Just a hint can enhance the flavor of your entire recipe. To avoid overwhelming your food, start small. Try dipping a toothpick in your oil and then swirling the toothpick in your food preparations.

Lavender Vitality Essential Oil Uses:

+ Make homemade fruit jams infused with Lavender Vitality essential oil. Try mixing it with blueberry, apricot, raspberry, or peach jams and jellies.

+ Combine Lavender Vitality’s earthy, low notes with bright citrus flavors.

+ Experiment with lavender-lemonade or a citrus sorbet.

+ Complement dairy with Lavender Vitality in shortbread, pound cake, ice cream, meringue, or whipped cream recipes.

+Balance Lavender Vitality in savory dishes with herbs such as thyme, rosemary, and oregano.

----------------------------------------

So how do YOU love to use lavender? What are your stories with this oil? Share in the comments (I'm going to as well!). Tag your new team members in this post. Get them excited about using this oil and all the ways it can benefit their lives!

Thieves Essential Oil Incredible Immune Support

MEET THIEVES - INCREDIBLE IMMUNE SUPPORT

Boosting Immunity

Oh, the joy that came into our home the day the mailman brought Thieves to our door. Like a giant sigh of relief for a Mama/Daughter/Bubby trying to care for our family, I felt like I had a new bodyguard on duty with me. High five, Thieves. We HEART you in a family of 12 hands, 12 feet,
(6 family members ages 1 - 83!!!) and countless opportunities to bring unwelcome “guests” home with us from every surface.

We love to apply Thieves Oil to feet as part of our morning routine and other oils designed for a happier, healthier family. Because who has time for anything else when we have so much to learn and so much to do?
+ Thieves® essential oil is a powerful combination of Clove, Lemon, Cinnamon, Eucalyptus Radiata, and Rosemary essential oils for an aromatic blend that fills any space with a rich, spicy aroma and has many benefits for healthy kids and clean homes.

DAILY. Guys, DAILY. Rub this amazing blend on all of your feet - every.single.day

The Science Behind Thieves Oil
WHY are we rubbing Thieves Essential Oil on our feet, putting it in our diffusers, and using it in our cleaners, sprays, detergents, and hand soaps?

Why is Thieves Vitality Oil in our cough drops, and why are these oils in our supplement, Inner Defense? Because the individual oils that make up this incredible blend have been studied successfully for their ability to inhibit even the growth of multidrug resistant bacteria.

Pubmed.gov is full of complicated and hard to understand research showing study after study where essential oils prove their serious power over the bad guys in our bodies and homes. Like the study quoted below:

"In this study, 83 essential oils were initially screened for biofilm inhibition against Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Cinnamon bark oil and its main constituent cinnamaldehyde at 0.05% (v/v) markedly inhibited P. aeruginosa biofilm formation."

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/25500277

Not into all the science jargon? Let's break it down.

The biggest and ugliest stuff that just keeps growing even when hit with the strongest drugs and chemicals? It apparently runs SCARED from these oils. Scared. So let's add this up.

Your body. Your home. Your surfaces. Your air. All protected by this combination of master warriors.

That's pretty much what we're doing with our beloved Thieves. Putting it in every product we can so that we have the maximum fighting power at work on behalf of our health.

I don't know about you, but I'm all about something fighting FOR me, for my health, and for my family each day.

Consistency is key with essential oils

Oils work so differently than what we are used to. The key is not to pull them out in a tizzy and hope for the best. No, you need to use them daily, throughout the day - week after week.

Consistency is key with oils.

Here are my tips,

1. Use them daily and throughout the day- this is key!

2. PUT YOUR OILS OUT....all through the house in the spots where you will need them. The kitchen, the bathroom, your purse, the list goes on.....

Out of sight means out of mind, and we are creating a new habit here. Have them easy to grab!

3. Use them.

Don't be intimidated or overwhelmed....just grab them, roll them on the bottom of your feet to begin, diffuse them, smell them.

We are so used to "masking things" and "quick fixes" instead of seeking out how to support our bodies consistently.

xoxo

Selling Vintage Fur

The debate over fur is an emotional battleground where ethics, attitudes and lifestyles collide.
Jan Tomes

I recently wrote and published an essay about fur.
You may read it here.

This past weekend I attended an INCREDIBLE holiday event in Collingwood, Ontario, Canada.  There were many talented vendors selling their creations.  One booth that was crowded and clearly selling their goods. A vintage fur booth!

I have owned and worn fur in the past - 1980's. It was a full length wolf coat.  Then I shied away from it for obvious reasons.  I tried to sell it in the late 90's and nobody would touch it.  I think I ended up dropping it off at a clothing donation box.  Hopefully someone who needed to stay warm ended up with it.  It was beautiful and toasty warm.

Now I am asking different questions like:

1.  What should we do with the thousands of used fur coats?  Send them to a landfill?
2.  Should we give them away to people in need?  Those who must stay warm?
3.  What about film and theatre costume departments? Do they need furs?
4.  Is it OK to wear vintage fur?
5.  Are the furs our Grandmothers wore now collectible and it is OK to collect them?
6.  Recycle?  Upcycle? Burn?
7.  Donate them to charity?
8.  Give them to museums?

Price list of the average price of used fur:
  • Rabbit or Raccoon jacket: $100 – $500
  • Mink coat or jacket: $300-$750
  • Mink or Sable collared 1950s – 1960s wool coat: $75 to $250
  • Fox stole: $150 – $300
  • Mink or Sable stole: $200-$400
  • Mink or Sable collar: $20-$75
  • Mink or Sable boa: $50 – $200
  • Persian or Broadtail Lamb coat or jacket: $50-$450, more with mink collars or excellent condition
  • Mouton Lamb coat or jacket: $50 – $350. I’m a big fan of these personally but they often don’t age well.
  • Muff (Fox, Mink, Lamb): $40 – $350. A muff in good condition can go for strangely high prices.
  • Full Pelt (w/heads and feet) Fox stole: $50 – $300
  • Full Pelt Mink/Sable/Marten stole (w/heads & feet): $35-$150
  • Other types of furs in coats, jackets and stoles will usually range from $50 to $300.
  • $1000 and up for a full coat for the following furs: chinchilla, lynx, modern sables especially with provenance such as Blackglama.
  • Source We Love Fur

"Animal use is an integral part of many people’s lives, and is linked to essential products in our everyday life, such as medication, food, and clothing. Animals are used in medical testing in order to find cures to life-threatening diseases. We eat animals and while some people question the need to do this, there is plenty of evidence it can be done without harm to our planet. In fact, lots of land is better suited for pasture than for cultivation. And remember that animal manure is used to replenish the soil to grow crops. But if we are concerned about possible impacts, a small reduction in the amount of meat we consume – and waste – can go a long way. And lastly, we wear many types of animal products in order to protect ourselves from the elements. Fashion may not be essential, but clothing is. The need to keep warm in cold weather is a matter of life and death." - Truth About Fur

What are your thoughts on fur?
I love fur. I just don't know what to do about that 'love'.
I think it will remain in my heart as a memory.
I am perplexed.
