Gallerist Does Pictorialism

It has been such a long, long time since I have hung anything on the walls in my Etsy Shop. But guess what? I am curating a new exhibit to be hung soon! All the work will be for sale and 'a lot' different this time. I will be offering limited edition prints, signed and numbered on the front by me No. 1 through 5. Yes. That's correct. These will be lovely collector pieces. Only 5 of each will ever be produced! Shipping costs will be virtually nil as they will be shipped in a hard envelope. Very light weight. My selection of images will be printed on archival paper and ready for you to frame quickly and easily - to suit your own budget, style and decor. These will make an excellent gift for someone dear or for your own special spot. I will keep you posted. Won't be long now....... More info here.

The Mental Notes of Currie and The Plant Keeper

Damn You Currie!!!!

Where are you?  I might lose a lung riding my Bobbin down the lane to the post box.  I watch for the plume of dust.  I listen for the man's screeching tires and echo of the crows flapping away in a panic. Then I know the mail has arrived.  It's been seventeen days since I got a letter from you. I only have eight cigarettes left.  I keep them in the freezer.  You know I hope to get something from you at least every pack. Remember?

In honour of harvesting and processing my Chinese lanterns yesterday I made home-made egg rolls to eat with my sugar-boiled corn..  Thank God I was able to find a greasy little packet of plum sauce way, way in the back of the junk drawer!  Do you like where I put your butterfly painting?  This plant is so aggressive. It is taking over the entire border down by the pond.  I'm OK with it. Plants needs to be free. I am packing up a box of about 50 stems to ship to your studio. They will look spooky cool in one of your old coffee cans.  Just dump those crusty used paintbrushes out of one.  I need the exact address. Hurry up now!

Did I tell you I bought a pink ukulele?

Love Your Plant Keeper Forever.

Like a serial novella, served in continuous installments, this page is my publishing house for 'Photofiction'. A story unfolds with my photographs, illustrations and mixed-media pieces. A graphic novel of sorts!

Beach Superhighway

Our 'Beach Town' is so flat and I am not denouncing it to the world as boring. It really is flat. The terrain. It's geography. And! It's a very long, skinny place to live.  It stretches along the longest freshwater beach in the world. All this leads me to my main point.  Wasaga needs a 'Beach Superhighway'. For bicycles and pedestrians.  They did it in Denmark. Why not here?

From good.is:
"Imagine a city fed by dozens of miles-long bike super highways, separate from roads, streetlights, and harried drivers. Imagine living 10 miles outside a metropolis and zipping home from work—faster than you would in a car—on a solar-lit, asphalt ribbon, eliminating one ton of your personal carbon load annually. Witness the latest reason that Copenhagen is officially a bike commuters' Shangri-La: a bike super highway connecting the city to the suburb of Albertslund.

This bike super highway is just the first in a network of 26 total that will feed Denmark's biggest city—a web of bike-only avenues intended for utilitarian commuting, not just weekend joy riding. The Swedes have their own plan in the works for an inter-city bike highway as well. London also has a network underway, with one bike-only road complete and six more expected by 2015."

Every day in Greater Copenhagen, roughly 500,000 people choose the bicycle, in one of the world's richest countries. Here's some footage of rush hour, Copenhagen style.

Bikes already make up around 50 percent of all traffic in Copenhagen, but the authorities think they can raise this even further by creating new cycling highways, making it easier to race through the Danish capital.

"COPENHAGEN — Picture 11 miles of smoothly paved bike path meandering through the countryside. Largely uninterrupted by roads or intersections, it passes fields, backyards, chirping birds, a lake, some ducks and, at every mile, an air pump.  The cycle superhighway, which opened in April, is the first of 26 routes scheduled to be built to encourage more people to commute to and from Copenhagen by bicycle. More bike path than the Interstate its name suggests, it is the brainchild of city planners who were looking for ways to increase bicycle use in a place where half of the residents already bike to work or to school every day." - NYTimes

Let's be honest. Not too many of the 16,000 residents here actually commute that far to work.  Let's think of this future Beach Superhighway as a tourist attraction, (connecting kids to their schools) health benefit, environmental statement, a way to increase quality of life and property values and finally, for the happiness quotient.

This would not take too much to do. Dot the entire bicycle highway with many trees and it would become a cooling mini-climate-controlled zone too. It could integrate public art, resting gardens, benches, repair kiosks and  a perfect place to stay active, healthy and socialized! Viva La Beach!

More interesting information on 8-80 Cities.

The Unexpected Houseplant

I am indulging in an affair with houseplants and learning all about how to grow fresh air.   Of course, Martha does 'it' lovely.  Then I discovered Tovah Martin. (in Country Living Magazine)

Tovah Martin emerged from 25 years working at Logee's Greenhouses with a serious houseplant addiction. Author of the classics The New Terrarium and Tasha Tudor's Garden, Tovah has written more than a dozen gardening books. She served as garden editor for Victoria magazine throughout its lifetime and has been named the new Victoria's Writer in Residence for 2012. In addition, her articles appear in a broad range of magazines and periodicals, including Country Gardens, Garden Design, Coastal Home, Martha Stewart Living, House Beautiful, Connecticut magazine, Yankee, The Litchfield County Times, and The Daily Telegraph. For two years, she served as segment producer and frequent guest on the PBS television series Cultivating Life, and she is a repeat guest on the CBS Sunday Early Show. Tovah teaches houseplant cultivation to Master Gardeners and lectures extensively throughout the country.

An accredited Organic Land Care Professional through NOFA, Tovah gardens fanatically and organically both indoors and throughout her seven-acre Connecticut garden. In addition to bestowing their Sarah Chapman Francis Medal for "outstanding literary achievement" on Tovah in 2008, The Garden Club of America and the Litchfield Garden Club awarded Tovah honorary memberships. People, Places, Plants magazine called her "one of the top 10 most influential educators in gardening" and the Massachusetts Horticultural Society honored her with their Gold Medal "for extraordinary service to horticulture, especially greenhouses and indoor plants."
